Joining In!

Parents, Students, and Staff,
I was watching the movie Elf last week for about the 100th time, and there is this scene towards the end of the movie that is one of my favorite movie moments of all time.
In it, Jovie, the elf, starts singing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" in front of this big crowd at the entrance to Central Park.  She is singing because the Elf Code says "the best way to spread Christmas cheer, is to sing loud for all to hear" (not that anyone needed reminding about the Elf Code).  After a couple of lines, she is still the only one singing and everyone is staring at her . . .
. . . until the mom character joins in.  She is off key and totally embarrassed, but she does it anyway.  The cringing look on her face is perfect.  To me, that moment captures a beautiful part of human nature.  It is so powerful to overcome our own worries and be that first person to take a risk and join in.  It is something I see everyday in Bedford Schools. From students. From parents. From teachers.
In the spirit of the holidays, I want to thank all of you for joining in. Here is the clip: Elf - Santa is Coming to Town

Important Traffic Pattern Update

Traffic at Bedford Middle and High School
On January 4, 2016, we are making an adjustment to the direction of traffic.
 (Map,Explanation)
Although we will always have heavy traffic at the start and end of school, our hope is to lessen the congestion at these peak times.

  • Reverse the direction of the Parent Pick Up and Drop Off Area so parents will not need to make left turns at the two main intersections.
  • Extend two-way traffic to the concession stand ending at the West Parking Lot so parents can exit Parent Pick Up and Drop Off that way.
  • Close the central loop area during parent pick up and drop off (except for buses and students with special needs) to reduce the places where parents are crossing traffic.
As before, we ask all drivers to do the following:
  • Yield to pedestrians at all times when on campus.
  • Take turns at the main intersections when congestion is high.
  • Be patient.

Toys for Tots Drive

This year's Toys for Tots Campaign is underway! If every student and staff member donates at least one toy this year. That would be over 1500 toys and would make a huge impact in many families' lives this holiday season! For every new unwrapped toy donated, we are asking students AND staff to attach a slip of paper with their name onto the toy. We will remove the slip when the toy is collected and enter your name into a drawing for a brand new Hoverboard! There will also be a second drawing for a Shorty's gift card. The drawing will take place during long advisory on 12/18, which is the last day for collections. This contest is open to all students and staff members! Students from Mrs. Doyle's and Mr. Baird 's Advisories will come around during Thursday and Friday long advisory days to collect toys from you. Additionally, collection bins are located in the Library, Counseling office, Room 237 and all administrative offices throughout the school. Please bring in at least 1 toy, no matter how small this year. Thank you!

Juniors & Seniors allowed to bring Chromebooks beginning January 4th, 2016

This fall, Bedford High School implemented a 1-to-1 Chromebook program for all Freshman and Sophomore students.  Already, we have found that access to a device at anytime/anywhere during the school day helps improve teaching and learning.

Now that the program is launched, we believe upperclassmen will benefit from having a Chromebook device in school as well.  As a result, we have decided to allow Juniors and Seniors to bring a Chromebook device to school starting January 4th.

Families can either purchase a Chromebook device through the district (no higher than $177) or provide their own. With either option, the device must be enrolled into our Chromebook management system so that it can be activated on our wireless network.  This allows us to manage our school-provided Google accounts to push down content to students.

It is important that families understand that not all juniors and seniors are required to have a Chromebook.  As a result, we do not have the same expectation that chromebooks will be integrated into instruction for juniors/senior classes as do have for freshman/sophomore classes. It will be up to each teacher to decide if and how the devices can be used in class.

Please visit our 1-to-1 Chromebook Program website for information about the program (BHS Chromebook 1-to-1 Website).

If you would like your Junior or Senior student to be able to bring a Chromebook device to school, please submit this form no later than November 13th. After November 13th, we will confirm your selection and provide the final discounted price for those opting to purchase a device through the district. Families will also have the option to purchase accidental breakage/theft insurance for devices purchased through the district.

For current specifications of the device that the district would purchase on your behalf, click here.

November 10 Community Meeting

Parents and Staff,

In response to the threat posed to our community by the substance abuse epidemic, the Bedford Police Department in conjunction with the Bedford School District will host a community-wide meeting on Tuesday, November 10th, from 7P to 10P at the Manchester Christian Church, 56 Old Bedford Road, Bedford (across from Memorial School).  We want to thank Manchester Christian Church for graciously donating the use of their facility for this important endeavor.

The goal is to involve individuals and groups from throughout our community.  The focus is to first de-stigmatize this issue to encourage parent(s), student(s), loved one(s), friends and family to seek assistance for not only those suffering from substance abuse but also for guidance in education and treatment (agenda).  To accomplish this, we plan to have some gallant members of the community discuss their struggle with abuse in their families followed by a panel discussion and, most importantly, community engagement that we hope will lead to an action plan.

Anyone seeking more information about the meeting may contact the Police Department or the Superintendent's Office in person, by telephone or email.  On behalf of the Bedford Police Department and the Bedford School District, we want to thank you all for your assistance and whatever level of participation you are able to offer.

BHS Counseling Office

The School Counseling program at Bedford High School prides itself on the strong relationships that we build with our students. It is a pleasure to watch students grow over their four years as students with us. Over the years we have been very fortunate to have only changed School Counselor caseloads when we've added new staff.
This year, however, due to unforeseen enrollment growth, we must make a slight change in case-load assignments in order to maintain these important relationships. Knowing how important these relationships are to upperclassmen as they begin to transition to adult life, we have only moved 9th and 10th graders. You will see these new assignments below.
